There’s only onegood thingabout a delay
You can get up to €600 in compensation
How much compensation can I get for my Turkish Airlines flight delay?
The length of your journey and the duration of the delay are the two key factors that determine the compensation amount. If your journey was shorter than 1500km, you could be entitled to €250. For flights between 1500km and 3500km, your Turkish Airlines delay claim would be worth €400. Finally, if your trip exceeded 3500km, the compensation amount rises to €600!
|€ 250||€ 400||€ 600|
|Less than 1500 km||Between 1500 & 3500 km||More than 3500 km|
EU Regulation 261/2004 states that your flight delay compensation could be reduced in half if the duration of the flight is over 3500km and your delay is between 3 and 4 hours.
Am I entitled to compensation?
It is important to understand that EU Regulation 261/2004 applies to air passengers departing from:
- an EU airport, or
- a non-EU airport with an European airline
In some cases such as: airport traffic control restrictions, bird strikes, bad weather and airport personnel strikes, the airlines could not take measures to prevent a possible delay. Under these circumstances a disruption would not have been the airline’s fault and Turkish Airlines could refuse paying your compensation.
As flight compensation could be subject to specific conditions, we are providing you with our intuitive and easy to use compensation calculator. All we need are your flight details: flight number and date. Check your flight with us, now!
Turkish Airlines Flight Delay
To claim Turkish Airlines compensation, your flight needs to meet two basic conditions:
- You arrived at your final destination more than three hours behind schedule.
- Extraordinary circumstances were not the reason behind the flight delay.
What are extraordinary circumstances?
- Bird strikes
- Bad weather(e.g. Low visibility, snowstorm, strong crosswinds)
- Runway closures / air traffic control restrictions
- Airport personnel strikes
- Union strikes
- A medical emergency
- Political or social unrest
Airlines are required to minimise the duration of any flight delay and cancellation. However, if there are any extraordinary circumstances, Turkish Airlines is not responsible for paying compensation.
What about technical issues?
It is the airline’s responsibility to monitor the condition of their aircraft, hence to prevent the occurence of mechanical faults. Therefore, air passengers may be eligible to file a compensation claim.
It is important to understand that in some cases part of the delay could be made up for during the actual flight. If the delay upon arrival is less than 3 hours, you would not be entitled to Turkish Airlines compensation.
Flight delay is calculated as the difference between the actual and the scheduled time of arrival.
Turkish Airlines Cancellation
EC 261 states that you can claim compensation for your cancelled flight if you were informed of the cancellation less than two weeks before your actual departure.
Besides a refund for the total amount of your ticket or an alternative flight, you may be entitled to compensation. The table below details the conditions under which you could be entitled to Turkish Airlines compensation.
|Notice Given||Arrival at Final Destination|
|14 Days or More||No compensation|
|7-13 Days||Your alternate flight arrived at your final destination more than 4 hours late.|
|Less than 7 Days||
Your replacement flight arrived at your final destination more than 2 hours late.
It is common for the airlines to cancel flights on the day of the departure. Fortunately under European law, you can claim compensation if you are delayed at your final destination by more than 2 hours.
In the event of an overbooked flight, where Turkish Airlines denied your boarding, you have the options to:
- Get a full ticket refund and a return ticket to the original point of departure
- Get an alternate flight to your final destination - either as soon as possible or at a later date
It is important to know that for eligibility you had to be denied seating against your will.
In some cases the airline asks for volunteers willing to give up their seat in exchange for benefits. You should consider the offer carefully because if you accept it, you would lose your compensation eligibility.
The compensation amount that you can claim depends on the length of the journey.
