United Airlines Flight Delay Compensation and Reimbursement

Don’t miss out on United delayed flight compensation as high as $650

Your United Airlines flight was delayed? Time wasted, stress, ruined plans - nothing could make up for all the inconveniences caused by a flight delay.

Nevertheless, there is a small consolation: you could be eligible for compensation of up to $650 (€600). European Union regulation 261/2004 was designed to hold airlines responsible for flight disruptions such as delays, flight cancellations or overbooking. It entitles passengers traveling from a EU/UK airport or with a EU/UK airline to financial compensation.

However, claiming compensation is not always easy - airlines, including United, are not particularly keen on paying it. SkyRefund can facilitate this process and fight for your rights by handling all the administrative procedures.

Moreover, we will only get paid if you get paid: our fee is 35% of the compensation amount you receive. Utilize our free user-friendly calculator to check if you are entitled to compensation for your flight with United Airlines.

Air passenger rights for United Airlines flight delays

Europe and UK

Although it is an American airline, United’s flights departing from EU or UK airports (incl. codeshare flights) are governed by EU261/UK261.

These identical regulations ensure passenger rights’ protection for all air travelers. They require all airlines operating in Europe to compensate their customers in case of flight delays or cancellations, denied boarding, and missed connections.

However, in case of flight delays resulting from extraordinary circumstances, such as bad weather, ATC restrictions or security threats, airlines are freed of the obligation to pay compensation for flight delays or cancellations.

Extraordinary Circumstances

US domestic flights are unfortunately not eligible for compensation under UK or EU regulations.

What you are owed in case of a delayed United flight

EU261 rules that you can be compensated with up to $650 (€600) if your United flight from Europe gets delayed by more than 3 hours. Note that delays are calculated at arrival and not at departure time.

The amount of compensation depends on the length of the delay and the distance of your flight. We have summed up the possible outcomes in the table below.

  • Right to reimbursement or rerouting
If your delay exceeds 5 hours, apart from compensation for the time you have lost, you are entitled to a full or partial refund of your original ticket fare, plus a return flight to your original point of departure, if necessary.
  • Refund and compensation
Airlines are required to offer refunds to passengers in case of a long delay or cancellation. This aligns with the regulations that require airlines to compensate passengers for the inconvenience caused. What is more, air passengers might have the option to get compensation in the form of frequent flyer miles as an alternative benefit for their disrupted travel plans.
  • Up and downgrading
If the airline offers an alternative flight and an upgrade, you will not have to pay extra. On the other hand, if you get downgraded, you can get a 30-75% reimbursement of the original ticket fare.

What to do in case of a delayed United flight

  • Contact United Airlines’ customer service

Your first task is to discover the exact reason for the flight delay. This could be crucial for your compensation application. Keep your boarding pass, and any other documents issued by the airline.

  • Inquire about food vouchers or accommodation if applicable

United is also obliged to provide you with food vouchers, refreshments, and find you suitable accommodation if a long delay leaves you stranded at the airport overnight. Apart from providing accommodation, the airline is obligated to cover your transport expenses from and back to the airport.

If the flight is delayed more than 5 hours, you can choose to either wait or leave the airport.

Right to Care

  • Keep all your receipts

We strongly advise you to hold onto all receipts for meals, refreshments, and other expenses you may need to make while waiting for a resolution. You can get reimbursement for your expenses but only if you keep the proof.

  • Do not accept travel vouchers or other airline perks

United may offer to compensate you for your troubles with travel vouchers or upgrades for future flights.

While you are free to assess the situation and make your own decision whether such recompense is fair, you should know that once you accept such an offer from the airline, you will no longer be eligible for EU compensation.
