Rhodes airport: location, destinations, and services

Considering flying to Rhodes island for your Greek summer vacation this year? Here is all you need to know about the main airport of the beautiful Dodecanese island of Greece.

Location and history

Rhodes International Airport "Diagoras" or simply Diagoras International Airport (IATA: RHO) is located around 14 km from the capital city of the island, Rhodes town. After the Second World War, Rhodes aviation began operating civil flights from the former military Rhodes Maritsa Airport. However, the island needed a bigger and more modern civil airport and in 1977, the new Rhodes Airport Diagoras was opened.

How much compensation can you get for your flight disruption?

The compensation amount depends on the flight distance and the duration of the delay. In general, you can get reimbursement from €250 up to €600. You can consult the two tables below for the exact conditions in the case of a flight delay or cancellation.

Terminals

In 2019, “Diagoras” Airport was the fourth busiest airport in Greece. It has only one terminal, but with two separate buildings which are connected by a corridor, and one runway. In 2017 the Greek State granted concession of 14 regional airports (among which Rodes International Airport) to Fraport Greece. The company will be responsible for the maintenance, management, and development of those airports for the next 40 years.

In 2020, Fraport made some improvements to the airport, like increasing the number of check-in desks, departure gates, and security lanes. However, there is more that needs to be done and the existing terminal buildings are currently undergoing further reconstruction and modernization.

Transport

You can reach the airport by a private car, by public transportation (a bus for which the ticket costs €2.50), or by taxi (the cost is approximately €40 from Rhodes town). The buses run from 05:45 h to 23:45 h local time, twice every hour, and the ride lasts about 45 minutes.

The airport also has a parking lot, available 24/7, where you can leave both your private vehicle and your car rental. The first 20 minutes are free of charge, the first hour costs €4, and if you want to leave your vehicle overnight (up to 24 hours), the price is €10.

The only all-year round flights that are operated from Rhodes airport are internal Greek flights with Aegean airlines, Cycladic, Olympic Air, and Skyexpress. All other flights are seasonal or charters.

Major airlines like British Airways, Air France, Air Serbia, LOT, Lufthansa, Scandinavian Airlines, and low-cost airlines like Easyjet, Ryanair, and Wizz Air take passengers from Europe, Turkey, Armenia, and Israel to Rhodes town each summer. Charter flights are offered by Buzz, Eurowings, Smartwings, Sunclass Airlines, and others.

Apart from that, Diagoras airport offers air conditioning, free internet access, mobile charging stations, ATMs and currency exchange bureaus, and car hire services (among which Avis, Hertz and Sixt) to its visitors.

Unfortunately, flights are sometimes delayed, cancelled, or overbooked, especially in the peak summer season. In cases like these, passengers are usually advised to contact their airline travel agent, but if you made the booking on your own, you might find yourself in a rather unpleasant situation.

Fortunately, if you had something like this happen to you at Rhodes Airport in the last 3 years, you may be entitled to financial compensation of up to € 600! European Regulation No. 261/2004 protects passenger rights in the EU and UK and we at SkyRefund can help you claim your reimbursement.

You can check your compensation eligibility here and we will take care of the rest.
