Varna Airport: a port to Bulgaria’s marine capital

Thousands of tourists land in Varna each summer in search of a relaxing holiday in the beautiful Black sea resorts, such as Golden Sands, St. Constantine and Elena, Albena, etc. Varna Airport (IATA code VAR) was opened at its current location near the town of Aksakovo in 1947 and is indeed a port to the marine capital of Bulgaria.

In 2006 the airport was given in concession for a period of 35 years. The German-Bulgarian consortium "Fraport Twin Star Airport Management" invested over BGN 75 million for the construction of a new terminal, three times larger than the old one in terms of area. Terminal 2 operates around the clock and mainly serves international charter flights to destinations in nearly 20 countries.

In 2021, Varna airport welcomed just over a million passengers. “Fraport” notes a 62% increase in passenger traffic compared to the difficult year of 2020.

The terminal has 25 check-in counters equipped with modern passenger and baggage handling systems, as well as a modern retail area.
