Have you experienced a flight delay with Emirates in the past 3 years? You could be eligible for compensation as high as $700 (€600) according to European Regulation 261/2004, as long as the delay could have been prevented by the airline.
EU261 (or EC261) was created to ensure that airlines are held responsible for delays, cancellations, and denied boardings which are within their control. Air passengers who are traveling with EU-registered airlines or flying from EU airports are entitled to financial compensation if their itinerary gets disrupted.
Claiming your reimbursement from Emirates could be a time-consuming and tiring process; airlines are usually reluctant to pay and could try to blame the flight delay on extraordinary circumstances (see next section). In these cases, it is always helpful to have a reliable and knowledgeable partner on your side.
SkyRefund would gladly be your trusted ally in your pursuit for justice. You can count on us to manage your claim for compensation professionally. We will inform you about your rights as an air passenger and handle the entire process on your behalf.

Even if Emirates is not a European airline and if EU261 only applies to flights departing from European airports, US citizens could also have their rights protected by this regulation. If you are a US national and your Emirates flight took off from Europe, you will be entitled to compensation, regardless of your destination.
Regulation EC261/2004 (EU261) applies to all air passengers, no matter their nationality, as long as their delayed flight with Emirates departs from Europe. Additionally, the delay should not be the result of extraordinary circumstances. Examples of such would be bad weather conditions, bird strikes, closure of airports due to staff strikes, restrictions applied by air traffic control, and security risks.
According to EC261 a flight is considered delayed if it reaches its final destination more than 3 hours later than the officially announced landing time. It is important to make this distinction, as planes sometimes take off more than 3 hours later than originally planned but can “catch up” during the flight and to minimize the delay.
Depending on the distance covered by the delayed flight, Emirates will have to pay you between $275 (€250) and $700 (€600). Shorter flights are only eligible for the smallest compensation amount, regardless of the duration of the delay. A delayed long-haul flight, however, could bring you the maximum compensation if it arrives at its final destination with over 4 hours delay. You can consult the table below to find the specific scenario that applies to your Emirates delay and the amount of compensation you can expect.
| Distance | More than 3 hours |
|---|---|
| All flights under 1,500 km | $275 (€250) |
| All flights between 1,500 - 3,500 km | $440 (€400) |
| Internal EU flights over 1,500 km | $440 (€400) |
| All Non-EU flights over 3,500 km | $700 (€600) |
When faced with a delayed flight from Emirates, it is essential to be aware of your rights and to understand them to handle the situation calmly and make well-informed choices. Consider the following advice:
Approach the airline staff at the airport or at their customer service line and insist on finding out the exact reason for the delay.
Gather any evidence that could serve as proof when you submit your compensation claim: information displays, recordings of announcements at the airport, screenshots of emails or text messages, etc. Additionally, note the exact arrival time of the plane with a video or an audio recording.
During your waiting time, request meals and refreshments and 2 free telephone calls or emails, which EU261 guarantees for you. If you need to stay somewhere overnight, you are entitled to a hotel and transport from and to the airport.
EU261 also allows you to claim canceled flight compensation from Emirates, as long as the general conditions that were described earlier are met. It is important to note that you will be entitled to compensation only if the UAE airline notified you about the cancellation less than 14 days before the departure. The amount of money you will receive again depends on the flight distance and on the delay of your alternate flight (if such is provided by the carrier).
No matter what the reason for the cancellation is, Emirates is obliged to offer you a replacement flight to your final destination or a full refund for the ticket fare you paid.
