How much compensation are you entitled to for your Emirates Airlines delay?
The length of your journey and the duration of the delay determine how much Emirates compensation you may be entitled to.
If your flight was shorter than 1,500 km, you could claim €250 for your disruption. If it spanned between 1,500 and 3,500 km, your compensation rises to €400. Finally, if your flight spanned more than 3,500 km, you could claim up to €600.
In reality, most European airports are located more than 3,500 km away from Dubai, Emirates’ largest hub. Therefore, in nearly all cases passengers will be eligible for €600 in compensation.

Less than 1500 km | Between 1500 & 3500 km | More than 3500 km |
Can I claim compensation for my Emirates flight?
EC 261 establishes the right to compensation in case of a flight disruption. If you have experienced a flight delay, cancellation, denied boarding or missed connection, you may be eligible for a refund.
Emirates Delay Compensation
You would be eligible for Emirates compensation if your flight meets the following conditions:
- Your flight departed from an EU airport.
- You reached your final destination with a delay of over three hours
- Your delay was not due to any extraordinary circumstances.
EU regulations on air travel apply to flights operated by EU airlines and flights which depart from the EU, regardless of the nationality of the operating carrier. As Emirates is registered in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, passengers would only be eligible for compensation if they departed from an EU airport.
Simply put, if the starting point of your journey was in the EU or your disruption occurred while you were connecting flights in the EU, you can submit an Emirates flight delay compensation claim.
For example, imagine you booked a trip from Boston to Dubai via Rome. If your connection is delayed, you could be eligible for €600 in compensation.
In addition, your compensation eligibility depends on the presence of any extraordinary circumstances. In general, these would encompass any events that result in a delay or cancellation which the air carrier would not be able to prevent or ameliorate.
Common causes of such exceptional situations include but are not limited to:
- Very bad weather
- Political or civil unrest
- Security risks
- Bird strikes
- Air Traffic Control strikes
- Hidden manufacturing defects
In general, in these cases, the airline would not have the means to prevent or mitigate the disruption.
Under these circumstances, an Emirates delay or cancellation would not have been the airline’s fault. This is why it would not be responsible for paying flight compensation to the affected passengers.
However, the following circumstances are not considered exceptional, so you may have a valid compensation claim:
- Bad weather that affected a previous flight
- Problems with airline staff
- Technical problems preventing the aircraft from taking off
- Denied boarding caused by overbooking

Emirates Flight Cancellation
According to EC 261, you can claim compensation for your cancelled flight if:
-
You were informed of the cancellation less than 14 days before the scheduled departure
-
Your alternate flight to your final destination arrived more than 4 hours late.
-
Your Emirates cancellation was not caused by any extraordinary circumstances
In most cases, Emirates flight cancellations will happen on the day of departure. If you are notified of the disruption less than 7 days prior to takeoff, you can claim reimbursement if your replacement flight arrives more than 2 hours late.
Don’t forget:
You are entitled to a replacement flight or a full refund of your tickets regardless of whether you are eligible for cancellation compensation or not.
In fact most passengers would automatically be booked to the next flight to their final destination. However, you could choose to fly at another time or not at all. In the latter case, you would receive a full ticket refund.
Right to Food and Drinks in case of a Emirates delay or cancellation
If your Emirates flight was delayed or cancelled, the airline is required to help you out during your wait. Passengers are entitled to food and drinks for the duration between the scheduled time of departure and the actual takeoff.
Unlike the right to compensation in case of a late or cancelled flight, the right to care applies even when there are extraordinary circumstances. This means that Emirates should cover all of your unavoidable expenses even if the delay was due to inclement weather or a strike. It should also cover your hotel room, in case you need to spend the night.
The airline will often provide you with vouchers for a specific amount. But if it doesn’t, you can still make all your necessary purchases. Emirates will have to pay for all the expenditures that you can prove.
Just remember: keep your receipts. They will be used as evidence for your expenses later on.
In fact, you can get a refund for any expenses that exceed the voucher amount.
Missed Connections
With one exception, claiming compensation for Emirates missed connections is subject to nearly the same restrictions as claiming for flight delay:
- You need to have arrived at your final destination with an overall delay of 3 hours.
- There were no extraordinary circumstances surrounding your flight.
- Your flight delay occurred in the EU or your trip began in the EU and a subsequent flight was delayed.
- Your flights tickets were on the same reservation.
While it may sound a little more complicated, it is enough to remember that when passengers depart from the EU, they would be covered by EC 261. They can submit a claim for missed connection compensation.
If you have missed your flight, try to contact an Emirates representative as soon as possible. This will make it significantly easier for you to find a seat on the next flight to your final destination.
