The air travel industry is expanding continuously and consequently, new challenges arise for airlines all over the world. In the post-COVID era, significant staff shortages at airports and airlines have resulted in frequent flight delays and cancelations.
Air passengers are often left to deal with the aftermath of flight disruptions on their own but fortunately, the European Union and the UK Parliament issued Regulation 261/2004, designed to offer at least some legal protection to travelers.
Qatar flights departing from European airports fall under EU261’s umbrella and thus, you may claim compensation between $275 (€250) and $700 (€600) for flights with Qatar Airways that got delayed or canceled by the airline.
SkyRefund can help you receive your compensation from Qatar: our expert team of legal professionals will liaise with the airline and advocate for your rights. EU Regulation 261 requires airlines to pay compensation to their customers in case of delayed or canceled flights, missed connections, and denied boardings. The flights eligible for such compensation must be operated by an airline registered in the EU or UK or depart from a EU or UK airport.
Additionally, a flight is considered delayed for the purposes of EU261 if it lands at its final destination with a delay of 3 or more hours. Delays resulting from extraordinary circumstances (bad weather, air traffic control restrictions, terrorist attacks, etc.) are not eligible for compensation.
Flights to or from the United States with Qatar Airways are unfortunately not a subject of EU261 or UK261. Nevertheless, you may turn to the Department of Transportation in case of flight disruptions and ask for assistance in obtaining compensation from Qatar.
When a Qatar flight gets severely delayed, getting the right information is key. Whether you are at the airport or still at home, your first task is to contact the airline staff and inquire about the specific reasons for the delay. Collect as much evidence as possible, having enough proof for the airline’s liability could strengthen your case if the claim ends up in court.
Being aware of your rights is extremely important in these cases: according to EU261 Qatar is obliged to provide meals and refreshments, two free phone calls and emails, a place to stay overnight if needed, and transportation from and to the airport. Be sure to request all these amenities as they are your legal right.
In addition, save all relevant receipts from expenses you were forced to make as a result of the delay. These could later be reimbursed.
The compensation that Qatar is obliged to provide to its customers in case of flight delays varies based on both the distance of the flight in kilometers and the duration of the delay. The following table offers a detailed breakdown of the different situations and the corresponding compensation amounts.
| Amount | Distance | Example flight |
|---|---|---|
| €250 ($265) | Under 1,500 km (ca. 932 mi) | London → Paris (213 mi) |
| €400 ($425) | 1,500–3,500 km (ca. 932–2,175 mi) |
Rome → Stockholm (1,246 mi) |
| €600 ($700) | Over 3,500 km (ca. 2,175 mi) | Frankfurt → New York (3,854 mi) |

A Qatar Airways canceled flight could bring compensation of up to $700 (€600) if the flight departs from Europe. As long as there are no extraordinary circumstances involved in the annulment, EU261 entitles Qatar passengers to reimbursement.
However, the compensation amounts vary depending on when the airline announces the cancelation. If Qatar notifies the passengers 2 or more weeks in advance, the airline is exempt from paying compensation.
If the cancelation is announced between 7 and 14 days before the originally scheduled departure time and the replacement flight reaches the final destination with a delay of more than 4 hours, Qatar needs to pay between $275 (€250) and $700 (€600), depending on the flight distance.
If the cancelation is announced less than 7 days before departure and the alternate flight gets to the final destination 2 hours later than planned, Qatar also needs to pay compensation between $275 (€250) and $700 (€600), subject to the distance covered by the flight.
EU261 also decrees that in the event of a flight cancelation Qatar Airways is obliged to provide travelers with a replacement flight free of charge or a full refund of the purchased ticket fare, regardless of when the annulment is announced.
You can submit a claim for Qatar Airways canceled flight compensation with SkyRefund following the same process as a flight delay compensation claim.
