The amount of your Qatar compensation will be determined by the distance of your flight.

Can I claim compensation for my Qatar Airways flight?

EC 261 establishes the right to compensation in case of a flight disruption. If you have experienced a flight delay, cancellation, denied boarding or missed connection, you may be eligible for a refund.

Qatar Airways Flight Delay

In general, air passengers will be entitled to compensation for their flight if their delay meets the following requirements:

  • The flight was operated by an EU airline or departed from an EU airport
  • It did not result from any extraordinary circumstances (more on this below).
  • You arrived at your final destination with a delay of over three hours.

Check My Flight

EC 261 appies only to flights, operated by EU airlines or departing from the European Union. This means that passengers can only claim Qatar Airways flight delay compensation if the starting point of their journey was within the EU. This includes trips with connecting flights in the EU.

Imagine, for example, that you flew from New York City to Doha and had a connection in Frankfurt, Germany. If your second flight is delayed, you could claim compensation as the Frankfurt- Doha flight would depart from the EU.

In addition, it is important that your delay was not brought about by any extraordinary circumstances. These include any events that cause unpreventable cancellations or delays. If the airline is unable to prevent or mitigate a delay, it would not be required to compensate its passengers.

Extraordinary circumstances commonly include:

  • Bad weather conditions
  • Air Traffic Control restrictions (e.g. runway closures)
  • Airport personnel or union strikes
  • Bird strikes
  • Security risks

If you arrived late due to any of abovementioned reasons, you would not be able to claim Qatar Airways delay compensation.

Finally, to be eligible for compensation, you need to have arrived at your final destination with an overall delay of over three hours. Your delay is calculated based on the actual arrival time minus the expected arrival time, not the departure time.

There will be some cases in which the flight crew would successfuly reduce the delay during the flight  itself so that it arrives less than three hours late. In these instances, passengers would not be entitled to compensation. For example, if your flight arrived 2:45h late, you would not be eligible for Qatar Airways refund. But if you arrived even one minute on top of the three-hour threshold, you would be entitled to compensation. Thin lines.

If your flight meets all three of these, you are eligible for Qatar Airways delayed flight compensation. Unfortunately, entitlement is only the beginning; you also have to enforce your right and prove it to the airline.

Submit your compensation form and SkyRefund’s claim experts will ensure that the airline pays you your compensation, even if this means taking the carrier to court.

Qatar Airways Flight Cancellations

If you have suffered a cancelled Qatar flight, you could be eligible for compensation of up to €600. The amount is the same but the eligibility conditions differ slightly from the ones for claiming delay compensation.

For entitlement, your flight needs to meet the following requirements:

  • You were informed of the cancellation less than 14 days before the scheduled departure
  • Your alternate flight to your final destination arrived more than 4 hours late.
  • Your Qatar Airways cancellation was not caused by any extraordinary circumstances

Is My Flight Eligible?

Were you informed of the disruption less than 7 days prior to your flight? In this case, you will be eligible to claim Qatar Airways cancellation compensation even if you arrived only 2 hours behind schedule.

Remember: Even if you are not eligible for flight cancellation compensation, you retain the right to a full refund of your ticket or rerouting to your final destination.

Missed Connections

Claiming compensation for Qatar Airways missed connections is dependent on almost the same restrictions as claiming for flight delays:

  1. You need to have arrived at your final destination with an overall delay of 3 hours.
  2. Your missed connection was not a result of any extraordinary circumstances (e.g. bad weather, airport strikes).
  3. Your flight delay either occurred in the EU or your trip began in the EU.
  4. Your flight tickets were on the same reservation.

To claim compensation for a missed Qatar Airways connection, your tickets should be issued under the same booking number. If so, the different flights that make up your journey will be interpreted by the airline as belonging to one trip.

Imagine the following example. Your inbound flight to Doha is delayed by 2 hours. As a result, you miss your connecting flight. If your tickets are not on the same booking, you would not be eligible for Qatar flight compensation because your delay is shorter than 3 hours. Conversely, if your flights are on the same booking, what would matter is that you have arrived at your final destination more than 3 hours late.

Remember: when passengers depart from the EU, they would be covered by EC 261. They can submit a claim for missed connection compensation.

If you have missed your flight, try to contact a Qatar Airways desk as soon as possible. This will make it significantly easier for you to find a seat on the next flight to your next destination.
