How Our Flight Delay Compensation Calculator Works

SkyRefund’s flight delay compensation calculator gives you an instant, accurate answer about your eligibility for compensation. It's updated to follow the European Regulation EC261 and other similar regulations that protect your rights during flight disruptions. This includes:

  • Flight delays of over 3 hours at the time of arrival at your destination
  • Cancellations made less than 14 days before departure with no suitable alternative flight provided
  • Being involuntarily denied boarding for reasons the airline could control, such as overbooking

Knowing your rights under EC261 is valuable, so you can claim compensation properly if a disruption occurs.

EC261 applies to all flights departing from EU countries and even extends to certain non-EU countries like Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iceland, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Norway, Serbia, as well as Switzerland.

Example: If you experienced a Jet2 flight delay of more than 3 hours, you could be owed compensation. For example, if you were travelling from the UK to Greece or from Greece back to the UK, you would be covered. The same applies to flights to Antalya, Türkiye, because Jet2 is a British airline.

In addition to EC261, if you are travelling from the UK, you are also entitled to compensation under the UK261 Regulation, which follows the same rules. This means you could use our flight delay compensation calculator to check how much you can claim for flights to and from the UK.

Similarly, Türkiye's SHY Regulation applies to flights departing from Turkey or those operated by a Turkish airline, ensuring you are covered in throughout Europe.

It is important to note that these regulations do not apply to flights within the United States. However, if your journey was from Europe to the US, you are still covered.

Similarly, other countries have their passenger rights laws. Brazil's ANAC 400 applies to flights to, from, or within Brazil, granting passengers compensation for delays over four hours and requiring airlines to provide care and assistance.

In Saudi Arabia, the GACA regulations cover flights to and from Saudi airports, allowing passengers to claim compensation for delays exceeding three hours.

In Canada, the Air Passenger Protection Regulations (APPR) entitle passengers to compensation for delays or cancellations within the airline's control on flights to, from, or within the country.

How is Flight Compensation Calculated

The compensation you are eligible for is not a fixed amount. Our calculator estimates it based on two main factors: the duration of the flight delay and the distance of the flight. Put simply, the farther you travel, the more compensation you may be able to claim.

These amounts are standardized under EU law. Here’s a breakdown of the flight delay compensation, you can expect:

More than 3 hours Distance
€250 (£220) Up to 1,500 km
€400 (£350) 1,500–3,500 km
€400 (£350) 3,500+ km (within EU)
€600 (£520) 3,500+ km (departing from EU)

Important: When Compensation Doesn't Apply

When using the calculator, remember that not all disruptions qualify for compensation. Your flight delay may not be eligible if it was caused by what are known as “extraordinary circumstances.”

Reasons Beyond the Airline's Control

These are events that are considered to be outside the airline's control, such as:

  • Bad weather
  • Strikes by non-airline staff
  • Political acts

In these specific situations, the airline is not obligated to pay compensation.

What are My Flight Delay Rights?

If your flight is delayed by more than 3 hours on arrival and the airline is at fault, you are entitled to compensation. The amount is a fixed sum, ranging from €250 to €600 per person, based on the distance of your flight. Your rights to compensation are protected by EC261 and other similar regulations.

How Long Does a Flight Have to be Delayed to Get Compensation?

To be eligible for compensation, your flight must arrive at your final destination more than 3 hours late. It's important to note that the compensation is based on your arrival time at the destination, not the departure time.

  • Boarding Pass
  • ID Card/Passport
  • Receipts (in case you have made any expenses for meals, refreshments, accommodation, transport, etc. that the operating carrier is responsible for providing in certain cases)
  • Delay statement (in case you have a copy of the airline’s statement for the reasons for the delay)

What if My Flight Was Cancelled?

You are entitled to compensation if the airline cancels your flight less than 14 days before your scheduled departure and does not offer you a suitable alternative flight.
