About TAP Air Portugal
TAP, Portugal’s flag carrier was founded in 1945. Its first operations connected Lisbon with Madrid, Porto and with Portugal’s colonies at the time. The airline’s first jet services began in 1962. By 1964 the company was flying more than a million passengers a year. In addition, the early 2000s saw TAP Air Portugal expand to new destinations including Moscow and Helsinki.
More recently, in 2005 TAP became a member of Star Alliance. As a result, it began making use of codesharing opportunities with other alliance members. In 2006, it bought a majority share in the local Portuguese airline Portugalia. Eventually, it was rebranded as TAP Express and its entire fleet was scheduled for renewal. Due to economic pressure, the Portuguese government was forced to sell some of its share in the airline. As a result, today Atlantic Gateway controls 61% of TAP Portugal’s capital. The privatisation is considered to have refreshed the airline’s image. Old services were renewed and new ones established.
In the fall of 2017, the airline was renamed to TAP Air Portugal.
As of 2017, TAP flies to 87 cities in 34 countries and connects Europe with three more continents. It is the European carrier with the most flights to Brazil. Its fleet currently consists of 70 aircraft and as part of its renewal, another 69 have been ordered. In addition, TAP Express has 21 planes in its services, which are used for its short and medium-haul routes. The main hub for both TAP Air Portugal and TAP Express is Lisbon Airport (LIS). The airport also serves as a major hub for Ryanair and easyJet.
